We’re in our first race week of 2017 as the Formula 1 season prepares for lights out at Melbourne.
The perfect curtain raiser to a year of racing, Albert Park has thrown up some top races over the years, whilst the country has also given us those races that took place during other times of the year at Adelaide.
So, as we head towards Sunday, it’s time to take a look at thef1apex.com’s top 5 Australian GPs continuing with this one from 1994…
Very few World Championship battles can be summed up in a photo but 1994 certainly falls into that bracket.
The title race between Damon Hill and Michael Schumacher will live long in the memory as the two traded blows throughout the year.
And, coming into the final race just a point separated the pair.
It was set up perfectly, then, with Schumacher 2nd and Hill 3rd on the grid – something that changed to 1st and 2nd pretty sharpish.
The battle commenced for 36 laps with both trading quick lap times before the German made a mistake and handed Hill an opening.
Indeed, the Briton went for it as all drivers would but found Schumacher closing the door – leading to our now infamous image.
Schumacher was eliminated on the spot whilst Hill was forced to retire with suspension damage, leaving the German to take his first world title in acrimonious circumstances.
