We’re in our first race week of 2017 as the Formula 1 season prepares for lights out at Melbourne.
The perfect curtain raiser to a year of racing, Albert Park has thrown up some top races over the years, whilst the country has also given us those races that took place during other times of the year at Adelaide.
So, as we head towards Sunday, it’s time to take a look at thef1apex.com’s top 5 Australian GPs, continuing with this one from 1996…
This was a very memorable race and, for Martin Brundle, one he’ll surely never forget.
Turn 3 at Albert Park has seen plenty of incidents over the years with only last season seeing Fernando Alonso go barrel rolling into the gravel.
Brundle, though, was the pioneer of such an incident as he caught the back-ends of David Coulthard and Johnny Herbert and speared off of the track.
He would get back out there in the spare but had an otherwise unremarkable race as the Williams’ of Jacques Villeneuve and Damon Hill dominated.
It would have been the debutante Canadian’s maiden win, too, as he led for most of the race but an oil leak allowed his team-mate to breeze through.
1996 had arrived, and Damon Hill had set the tone!
